Anime and gaming fans finally have a festival of their own in the capital, as Animenia Abu Dhabi arrives at Manarat Al Saadiyat from 23 to 27 October. Organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi with event agency BRAG, it brings anime and gaming culture together in one place. With the beachfront of Saadiyat Island as the backdrop, the first edition recreates the futuristic world of Neo-Tokyo, which makes it an easy yes for anime fans.

Animenia Abu Dhabi has been designed for the growing anime community in the Middle East. International Cosplay Competition with Record-Breaking Prizes
The big draw for many is the international cosplay competition, where fans dress up as their favorite characters from anime, video games and comics. This year’s event has a record prize pool of AED 400,000, the largest ever for an anime festival worldwide. The competition has categories for both solo and group cosplayers, with additional prizes for Best in Craftsmanship, Best in Performance and Best in Anime Adaptation. Cosplayers from around the globe are expected to compete, so this is one of the festival’s main events.

Meeting the people behind the shows you grew up with is a big part of the appeal. At Animenia Abu Dhabi, fans can talk to anime directors, manga artists and voice actors through meet-and-greets and workshops. Yutaka Abe, known for his work on Detective Conan, and Ryo Horikawa, the voice behind Vegeta in Dragon Ball, are among the names attending. Also on the list are Kenji Watanabe, the name behind Digimon, and Naoto Ohshima, the designer of Sonic the Hedgehog.

The festival’s interactive exhibits let you step into the worlds of your favorite characters. Well-known scenes from popular anime series are recreated for plenty of photo opportunities, and you can meet characters like Naruto, Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan and Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen. Hello Kitty fans are covered too, with Sanrio-themed exhibits for younger and older visitors alike.
Live Concerts Featuring J-Pop and Anime-Inspired Music
Animenia is also bringing big names in Japanese music to Abu Dhabi. Yoko Takahashi, known for her performance in Neon Genesis Evangelion, opens the festival’s live entertainment on 23 October. After that, the stage line-up includes Rasha Rizk, Flow, Angela and Mojo. Fans of Anime-inspired rock bands can catch Blinding Sunrise, Koyomi and Snowkel, who play the festival’s closing night on 27 October. That’s five days of live music for festival-goers.
Gaming Hub and Workshops for Anime and Gaming Enthusiasts
Gamers get a dedicated gaming hub with VR zones, Esports competitions and arcade games. Visitors can try anime-themed competitions or join workshops led by AD Gaming. These workshops are open to anime fans of all ages and cover anime drawing techniques, character design and more.
Tamiya will offer fans the chance to build their own car models for racing competitions, while Gunpla will host sessions for crafting Bandai Gundam model kits. These hands-on activities mean there’s something for everyone, from casual gamers to dedicated anime artists.

Q&A Sessions with Anime Industry Names
Animenia Abu Dhabi also gives fans the chance to sit in on Q&A sessions with some of the biggest names in anime and gaming. These sessions go behind the creative process of popular anime shows and video games. The line-up includes Yoko Shimomura, known for her work on Kingdom Hearts and Super Mario RPG, as well as Kikuko Inoue, the voice actress behind many well-loved anime characters.
