More than 10,000 athletes set to compete under the patronage of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed
Abu Dhabi is tightening its belts — literally — as it prepares to welcome the 17th Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship (ADWPJJC) this November. Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, the championship promises to be the biggest martial arts showdown of the year.
With more than 10,000 international male and female athletes expected, this is not just another tournament — it’s the Super Bowl of jiu-jitsu, the crown jewel of the martial arts world calendar.
Abu Dhabi: the global capital of Jiu-Jitsu
According to His Excellency Abdulmonem Al Hashemi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, the event underscores Abu Dhabi’s unmatched reputation as the “global capital of jiu-jitsu.” The championship has evolved over 16 editions into a premier international platform for nurturing talent, preparing champions, and showcasing the UAE’s leadership in sports.
This aligns with the emirate’s wider vision to promote health, active living, and community spirit — values already visible across other events like the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival.
What’s on the mat this year?
The official 11-day schedule kicks off on 12 November with the Amateur category. The excitement continues with:
- Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Festival (13–15 November): Competitions for infants, kids, and juniors, plus Para Jiu-Jitsu on 13 November.
- Youth & Junior categories (16–17 November): Rising stars of the sport take center stage.
- Masters competitions (18–19 November): Experience meets strategy in high-level battles.
- Professional competitions (20–22 November): The grand finale, featuring elite athletes from across the globe.
Building on a 16-year legacy
The ADWPJJC is more than a championship; it’s a celebration of culture, resilience, and athletic excellence. For Abu Dhabi, it’s another chance to prove why the emirate has become a magnet for international sports, from martial arts to motorsport, golf, and equestrian events like the Special Olympics MENA Regional Equestrian Games.
As the mats roll out this November, expect a whirlwind of armbars, takedowns, and triumphant celebrations — all set against the vibrant backdrop of Abu Dhabi.
