Abu Dhabi is buzzing with big projects — from the Sphere to the Zayed National Museum — but if you’re planning a road trip to the capital, there’s a more immediate change you need to watch out for: the new-look DARB toll system.
Starting Monday, September 1, 2025, the Department of Municipalities and Transport has rolled out updates to the city’s road toll rules, and they’ll have a real impact on daily driving. Here are the three biggest changes.
1. Fees Are Changing
Gone are the days of paying once and cruising toll-free. Now, every time you pass through a toll gate during peak hours, you’ll be charged Dhs4 — no matter how many times you cross.
The good news? Exemptions remain in place for eligible groups, including People of Determination, senior citizens, retirees, and low-income families.
2. Evening Toll Timings Extended
Evening peak hours are stretching their legs. Instead of starting at 5pm, toll charges now begin at 3pm and run until 7pm.
The morning toll window (7am–9am) remains unchanged, keeping the early commute as it was.
3. Daily and Monthly Caps Removed
Perhaps the most wallet-shaking update: daily and monthly caps are gone.
- Daily cap (previously Dhs16) → scrapped
- Monthly cap (previously Dhs200 for first vehicle, Dhs150 for second, Dhs100 for third) → scrapped
Translation? There’s no longer a maximum limit on toll charges per day or per month. If you’re driving frequently during peak hours, costs can stack up fast.
Abu Dhabi Drivers, Take Note
The DARB toll changes are designed to reduce congestion and encourage smarter driving habits, but they also mean more planning for commuters and visitors. If you’re hitting the road, time your journeys wisely to avoid unnecessary toll costs.
