3 Important Changes to Abu Dhabi’s DARB Toll System Coming Next Month

Big changes are coming to Abu Dhabi’s roads. From September 1, the DARB toll system will introduce new fees, longer evening timings, and the removal of daily and monthly caps — reshaping commutes across the city.

Abu Dhabi never stays still. With massive projects like the Sphere and the Zayed National Museum on the horizon, the city is always evolving. But before those future landmarks open, there’s a more immediate update that’s about to shake up daily life: the new-look DARB toll system, going live on September 1.

The move comes after recent revisions to DARB toll prices and timings, announced by Abu Dhabi Mobility and the Department of Municipalities & Transport. So, what exactly is changing? Let’s break it down.

1. Fees Are Changing (But Not for Everyone)

From September, each pass through a toll gate during peak hours will cost Dhs4 — every single time. No more paying once and coasting through for free on your second run.

The silver lining? Exemptions remain for People of Determination, low-income families, retirees, and senior citizens in Abu Dhabi.

2. Evening Toll Timings Are Getting Longer

The evening peak period is stretching its legs. Instead of starting at 5pm, it will now kick in at 3pm and last until 7pm. Morning timings stay the same at 7am–9am.

Translation: those quick mid-afternoon errands might now cost you more unless you plan around them.

3. Daily & Monthly Toll Caps Are Gone

This is the game-changer. The daily cap of Dhs16 and monthly caps (Dhs200 per vehicle) will be scrapped. That means no maximum limit on how much you can be charged.

For commuters who zigzag across the city multiple times a day, this could sting. It might even make alternatives like public transport in Abu Dhabi more appealing — especially with initiatives like the Dh5 fare cap on buses.

What This Means for Drivers

With toll caps gone and evening hours extended, smart timing is key. Planning your commute is more important than ever — whether that means shifting your office hours or even considering Abu Dhabi’s growing alternatives, like the upcoming Etihad Rail link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

And it’s not just tolls. The emirate is upgrading its wider road network too, with major projects like new bridges in Abu Dhabi designed to cut traffic delays by 80%.

So, while your wallet might feel the squeeze at the toll gates, the bigger picture shows Abu Dhabi working towards smoother, faster, and more sustainable journeys.
