How Free Flow Actually Works
The system uses automatic number plate recognition – smart cameras backed by AI that identify your vehicle as it enters a designated parking area. The chargeable period starts upon entry, and the fee is deducted from your Darb e-wallet upon exit. That is the entire user experience: drive in, park, drive out. The same wallet you already use for the Darb toll gates handles everything.
For anyone keeping score, that retires four different rituals at once: coins, cards at the machine, the SMS to 3009, and the paper ticket sliding around your dashboard.
Where It Is Live (and Where It Is Not)
The rollout starts at key locations, including the multi-story parking facilities and selected private car parks, ahead of a wider expansion across the emirate. Q Mobility has not yet published the exact list of first-phase locations, so for now treat any Mawaqif surface parking as business as usual – the regular zone rules, curb colours and payment methods all still apply. SMS, the Darb app, TAMM, and the machines remain available everywhere else.
The One Mistake That Gets You Fined
An empty Darb wallet. Because billing occurs automatically upon exit, Q Mobility has been explicit: keep a sufficient balance in your Darb e-wallet or risk fines. There is no machine to negotiate with and no grace ticket – the system simply records that you did not pay.

Part of a Much Bigger Expansion
Free Flow lands in the middle of the fastest expansion of paid parking Abu Dhabi has seen. Mohamed bin Zayed City’s commercial sectors ME9 and ME12 went paid on 6 May 2026, adding more than 10,000 chargeable spaces. Mussaffah’s sectors M1 to M4 and M24 joined in January, and the outer areas of Al Shahama last November. If your area was free last year, it is worth double-checking the curbs – and if you commute into the city, the Darb toll gates draw from the same wallet you will now need for parking.
