The Languages of the Cetaceans Abu Dhabi

How do whales and dolphins communicate beneath the ocean’s surface? The Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center, in collaboration with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, invites marine life enthusiasts and curious minds to discover the fascinating acoustic world of cetaceans at an upcoming Science Talk.

Titled “The Languages of the Cetaceans,” the session will take place on 29 October 2026 at 6:30 PM at the Center’s auditorium. The talk will be led by Dr. Olivier Adam, Deputy Director of the Ocean Institute at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi.

🧠 Drawing on his extensive research into cetacean acoustics, Dr. Adam will explore how whales, dolphins and porpoises produce sounds and use them to communicate and build social bonds, despite having no vocal cords. The discussion will examine the unique vocal mechanisms of baleen and toothed whales, the remarkable songs of humpback whales, and how artificial intelligence could help researchers understand these underwater conversations.

🔬 Launched in 2023, the Center’s Science Talk series has welcomed nearly 4,000 guests, bringing experts and the wider community together to explore science, environmental conservation and the natural history of the Arabian region.

The session offers an opportunity to learn more about marine life and the importance of protecting ocean ecosystems for future generations.
