Flying Taxis Are Coming To Abu Dhabi

Flying taxis are coming to Abu Dhabi! Archer’s Midnight aircraft will cut commute times and revolutionize urban travel.

Picture this: You’re stuck in traffic, watching minutes turn into hours as you crawl between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The frustration builds, the coffee runs out, and your playlist is on its third loop. But what if you could trade that soul-crushing commute for a breezy, 10-minute flight over the city skyline? Well, my friend, that future is officially taking off—literally.

Archer, the US-based electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) manufacturer, is bringing its Midnight aircraft to the UAE, and Abu Dhabi is first in line to roll out the red carpet for flying taxis. In a move that sounds straight out of The Jetsons, Archer and Abu Dhabi Aviation (ADA) have sealed the deal to introduce these airborne chariots to the region. And when they say ‘soon,’ they mean soon—we’re talking passenger flights launching later this year.

A Match Made in the Skies

ADA isn’t just dipping a toe into the future—they’re diving headfirst. As Archer’s first ‘Launch Edition’ customer, they’re gearing up to deploy an initial fleet of Midnight aircraft before 2024 bids us farewell. Their teams will be working side by side, training pilots, fine-tuning operations, and making sure the community is ready for this high-tech leap.

Archer isn’t just bringing aircraft; they’re rolling out a full-on flying taxi ecosystem, complete with a backend software system, a front-end booking app, and a squad of pilots, technicians, and engineers to keep things running smoothly. No, they won’t be wearing capes—but they probably should.

So, What’s This Midnight Aircraft?

Let’s talk specs. Midnight is a sleek, piloted, four-passenger flying machine designed to zip through the skies with minimal downtime between flights. Think of it as an Uber that skips the roads altogether. Your typical 60-to-90-minute car ride? Midnight turns that into a quick, effortless 10-to-30-minute flight. No traffic, no stress, no “Are we there yet?”—just pure, unadulterated convenience.

And the cost? Well, it’s not quite pocket change, but it’s not outrageous either. A trip between Dubai and Abu Dhabi will run you between Dh800 to Dh1,500, while shorter trips within Dubai are expected to be around Dh350. Pricey? Maybe. Worth it to soar over gridlocked highways like a VIP? Absolutely.

Building the Future in the UAE

Archer isn’t just flying into town and setting up shop—they’re going all in. Under the agreement with Abu Dhabi, they’ll manufacture Midnight aircraft right here in the UAE, making the country a hub for cutting-edge urban air mobility. This means job creation, innovation, and a whole lot of high-flying excitement.

Of course, they’re working closely with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and other key players to ensure everything is as safe as it is futuristic. Because while flying taxis are thrilling, a smooth, secure rollout is just as important as the thrill of takeoff.

Not the Only Game in Town

Archer may be the first to launch in the UAE, but they’re not flying solo in this space race. Joby, another big name in the eVTOL world, has its sights set on Dubai, where the city’s first commercial vertiport—Dubai International Vertiport (DXV)—was recently unveiled near DXB. Translation? The UAE is about to be the epicenter of a flying taxi revolution, and competition is about to heat up.

The Countdown Begins

“Abu Dhabi Aviation has the expertise to develop a scalable urban air mobility service and we are excited to lead the way in launching the region’s first electric air taxi service,” says Nader Al Hammadi, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Aviation. Meanwhile, Archer’s CEO and Founder, Adam Goldstein, is calling this a game-changer, marking the beginning of a new chapter in urban transportation.

So, are we ready for a future where flying taxis are as normal as ordering a ride-share? Ready or not, it’s happening. Buckle up, Abu Dhabi—the skies are about to get a lot more exciting!
