The wait is almost over. After years of anticipation, architectural intrigue and plenty of “when is it actually opening?” conversations, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi finally has an official opening date.
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced that the landmark museum will welcome visitors from 11 December 2026.
Located on Saadiyat Island, the museum will bring modern and contemporary art, bold architecture and fresh global perspectives together under one very dramatic roof. And with 30 galleries, enormous outdoor exhibition areas and sculptural cones reaching 88 metres into the sky, subtlety was clearly never part of the plan.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Is Already Coming to Life Before Opening Day
You do not actually have to wait until 11 December to get your first taste of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
Ahead of the museum’s official opening, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is bringing a programme of talks, performances, workshops and interactive art experiences to cultural venues across the UAE.
The programme gives the public an early introduction to some of the artists, ideas and conversations that will eventually shape the museum itself.

Ever wanted to become part of an artwork rather than simply stand in front of one and thoughtfully nod?
This might be your chance.
Network of Answers is an interactive artwork by Guggenheim Abu Dhabi-commissioned artist Agatha Gothe-Snape.
The installation uses a phone booth to invite visitors to respond to a series of questions. Their answers can include personal reflections, memories and perspectives.
Together, these contributions will build a collective archive of voices from Abu Dhabi.
The installation takes place at Manarat Al Saadiyat from 22 September to 22 October, and no registration is required.

Art Appears: Chant Avedissian celebrates the life, work and legacy of Chant Avedissian through talks, workshops and interactive activities.
The programme explores the influences behind Avedissian’s distinctive visual language.
His work reinterpreted Egyptian cultural icons, histories and collective memory through a contemporary artistic lens.
Visitors will be able to explore those ideas through discussion and hands-on creative experiences at Manarat Al Saadiyat.

What Is Guggenheim Abu Dhabi?
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art, with a particular focus on artistic developments since the 1960s.

Designed by Frank Gehry
As if the art were not enough, the building itself is expected to become one of Abu Dhabi’s most recognisable landmarks.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi was designed by the late Frank Gehry, the Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architect known for creating buildings that look more like giant sculptures.
His previous works include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.
For Abu Dhabi, Gehry created a structure influenced by the museum’s position between land and sea. The result is bold, layered and deliberately unconventional.
The exterior features ten sculptural cones that shape the museum’s unmistakable skyline. Nine will be covered in stainless steel mesh, while one will be finished in onyx and glass.
The cones reach heights of up to 88 metres and serve more than an aesthetic purpose. They will provide natural ventilation and shade, helping improve the building’s energy efficiency.
So yes, they look impressive—but they are also doing some actual work.
Inside Guggenheim Abu Dhabi
The museum will contain 30 galleries connected by a central atrium.

He highlighted culture’s ability to build bridges between people and support forward-looking societies. He also said the museum would bring new perspectives to modern and contemporary art while creating opportunities for learning, creativity and cultural exchange.
The aim is to ensure that visitors from the UAE and around the world can recognise themselves within the stories being told.
Dr Mariët Westermann, Director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, said the museum’s collection would be both local and global.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will join an extraordinary concentration of museums and cultural attractions on Saadiyat Island.

And the district keeps growing. In October 2026 Aldar announced Noma, a new creative neighbourhood planned just north of Manarat Al Saadiyat – the name is a nod to that location, north of Manarat. Masterplan, tenants and opening date have not been released yet, but expect the first details to surface around Frieze Abu Dhabi, which runs 19-22 November 2026 at Manarat Al Saadiyat, here in the Cultural District.
And frankly, planning to “quickly visit one museum” on Saadiyat is about to become wildly unrealistic.
