If airports had a glow-up phase, Abu Dhabi Airports is officially living its main character moment because 2025 didn’t just break records — it casually obliterated them.
Let’s start with the headline flex: more than 33 million passengers passed through Abu Dhabi’s five airports last year. Yes, million with an M. That’s the biggest influx of travellers the emirate has ever seen, and it’s not even close. In fact, traffic across all five airports has doubled in just three years, which is the aviation equivalent of going from jog to full sprint.
AUH Is Not Playing Small Anymore
At the centre of all this action is Zayed International Airport (AUH) — now officially the fastest-growing mega airport in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Casual.
In just its second full year of operations, AUH handled 98% of all passenger traffic across the emirate and 73% of aircraft movements. Q4 2025 alone saw 8.59 million passengers, marking a solid 13.8% year-on-year growth. And yes, there were several days where traffic crossed 100,000 passengers in a single day — a big deal in the airport world and a clear sign that AUH knows how to keep things moving without chaos.
More Routes, More Airlines, More Reasons to Travel
One of the biggest reasons behind this sky-high success? Connectivity. AUH went all in on expansion, launching 39 new routes and welcoming 7 new airlines to its growing network.
Airlines like China Eastern Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Eurowings, Jazeera Airways, and home-grown favourite Etihad Airways either launched new services or ramped up frequencies. New destinations spanned the globe — from major hubs like Addis Ababa, Atlanta, and Hong Kong to exciting emerging routes including Berlin, Hanoi, Pune, and Warsaw.
Translation? Whether you’re planning a quick regional hop or a long-haul adventure, AUH probably has you covered.
It’s Not Just AUH — The Whole Network Is Winning
While AUH is stealing the spotlight, the rest of Abu Dhabi’s airports are quietly crushing it too.
Al Bateen Executive Airport (AZI) saw aircraft movements jump 15.3% in Q4 2025, with annual growth of 7% — proof that private and business aviation is booming. Meanwhile, Al Ain International Airport (AAN) recorded some seriously impressive numbers, with passenger traffic up 48.1% year-on-year in Q4 and 9.2% annually.
Basically, every corner of the emirate’s aviation map is trending upward.
Cargo Is Flying High Too
Passenger traffic isn’t the only thing taking off. Cargo volumes across Abu Dhabi’s airports reached nearly 770,000 tonnes in 2025, marking a 12% year-on-year increase. This growth highlights Abu Dhabi’s rising role as a global logistics and trade hub — quietly powering supply chains while the rest of us queue for boarding.
Awards? Of Course There Were Awards
Because what’s a record-breaking year without a few trophies?
In 2025, AUH was crowned Best Airport for Retail at the Frontier Awards, received Highly Commended recognition at the Aviation Business Awards, and earned ACI’s Level 2 Accessibility Accreditation along with the coveted Level 3 Customer Experience Accreditation. Add awards for cutting-edge technology and passenger experience initiatives, and it’s clear this airport isn’t just big — it’s good.
The Bigger Picture
As Ahmed Juma Al Shamisi, Acting CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, summed it up: this milestone isn’t just about numbers — it’s about readiness, resilience, and a long-term vision. With 19 consecutive periods of double-digit passenger growth and the first year ever to cross 30 million passengers across the network, Abu Dhabi Airports is proving that this success isn’t a fluke. It’s a strategy.
So yes, if it feels like everyone you know flew through Abu Dhabi last year… that’s because they probably did. And if 2025 was this big, buckle up — the runway ahead looks even busier.
