Sheikh Zayed Festival 2026-27: Your Complete Al Wathba Guide

Sheikh Zayed Festival 2026-27

Abu Dhabi’s biggest winter festival is back at Al Wathba from 30 October for 136 nights. Here is when to go, what’s new this season, which Saturdays bring the fireworks and how to beat the car park queue.

The weather has finally broken, the evenings are bearable again and that can only mean one thing: the Sheikh Zayed Festival is about to switch the lights back on in Al Wathba. The 2026-27 season opens on Friday 30 October 2026 and runs every single day until Sunday 14 March 2027 – that is 136 nights of cultural performances, international pavilions, street food, fireworks and new entertainment for the whole family.

If you have never been, think of it as Abu Dhabi’s answer to a world fair crossed with a giant winter night market, with a heritage village and a proper fireworks budget thrown in. If you have been, here is what is new, what is back and how to do it without spending half the night in the car park.

What is new at Sheikh Zayed Festival this season

The organisers have kept the formula that works and layered on more for the 2026-27 season. The headline additions:

  • Weekend main-stage concerts – leading Arab and Gulf artists perform on the main stage across weekends, with upgraded high-definition visual staging.
  • Music and theatre performances – a new strand of live shows running alongside the usual folkloric troupes.
  • Art and photography exhibitions – a quieter, gallery-style corner for when the kids need a breather (or you do).
  • Redesigned aerial light choreography – the night-sky show combining drones, lasers and fireworks has been rebuilt from scratch for this season.

The international pavilions

This is where most families lose an entire evening, and happily so. More than 15 countries and regions are taking part this season, including India, China, Japan, Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, Pakistan, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Syria, the Levant, the Americas and the GCC. Each pavilion is part architecture showcase, part bazaar and part food court, with handmade goods, traditional dress, live performances on open-air stages and street food you will be thinking about on the drive home.

WOW Abu Dhabi Expert Tip: Do the pavilions first, between 4pm and 7pm, then stake out your fireworks spot. By 8pm on a weekend the popular food stalls have queues that rival a Yas Island ride, and the pavilion lanes slow to a shuffle.

Emirati heritage and the Heritage Village

The festival is named for the UAE’s Founding Father, so heritage sits at its heart. The Heritage Village returns with Emirati customs, crafts and folkloric performances, and you will see master artisans weaving and working traditional crafts up close. Beyond the village, the season programme leans into sports rooted in the UAE environment – camel racing, falconry and maritime heritage – and runs themed sub-festivals celebrating plants, livestock, food, flowers and honey throughout the winter. If this is your kind of evening, our list of cultural things to do in Abu Dhabi has 17 more ideas, and the Zayed National Museum makes a natural daytime companion visit.

Fireworks, drones and the Emirates Fountain

Al Wathba does not do small skies. Expect:

  • Fireworks every Saturday night throughout the season. Last season they went up at around 10pm, so plan your evening around that.
  • Eid Al Etihad (UAE National Day, 2 December) – special fireworks, drone and laser displays across the holiday.
  • New Year’s Eve – the big one. To welcome 2026 the festival staged a 62-minute fireworks display and a drone show of around 6,500 drones, and previous seasons have collected Guinness World Records for both. Our New Year’s Eve in Abu Dhabi guide covers the alternatives if you would rather avoid the crowds.
  • The Emirates Fountain and Laser Show – water, light and music synchronised nightly, and the easiest crowd-pleaser on site for younger kids.

What last season actually looked like

The 2025-26 season ran under the theme “Hayyakum” (Welcome) from 1 November 2025 to 22 March 2026 and packed in more than 4,000 cultural events, 750 large-scale shows and over 20,000 participants, with national pavilions from 22 countries. Highlights included the Union Parade, dhow sailing races, the Zayed Grand Camel Race, a custom car show and weekly Liwa Nights concerts, while the Ramadan programme closed the season.

A few things that surprise first-timers:

  • It is enormous. Budget at least four hours and wear shoes you would happily walk 10,000 steps in.
  • Weeknights are a different festival. Sunday to Thursday is relaxed, with short queues and easy parking. Saturdays, holidays and New Year’s Eve are packed from sunset.
  • Food is the hidden highlight. Many regulars come for the pavilion street food alone, so arrive hungry and skip dinner before.

How to get to Sheikh Zayed Festival

Sheikh Zayed Festival grounds – Al Wathba South, Abu Dhabi, inland towards the Al Ain road and well away from the city centre, so allow a proper drive. Contact: info@zayedfestival.ae, zayedfestival.ae/en/plan-your-visit.

  • By car: Designated parking is available at the grounds, with valet service at the gate entrances.
  • By bus: Last season, Abu Dhabi Mobility ran Route 408 from Abu Dhabi Main Bus Station, Rabdan Mall on Al Ittihad Street and opposite Baniyas Court, every 30 minutes (every 20 minutes at peak). Outbound buses ran 3pm-10pm Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, with return services until 12.30am and 1.30am respectively. Check the Darb app or call Abu Dhabi Mobility on 800850 for this season’s timetable.
  • By taxi: There is a dedicated pick-up and drop-off zone. Book on 600535353 or the Abu Dhabi Taxi app. Our getting around Abu Dhabi guide breaks down fares and apps.

WOW Abu Dhabi Expert Tip: On fireworks Saturdays, the exit is the real queue, not the entry. Either leave the moment the last rocket fades or linger an extra 45 minutes over karak and luqaimat while the car parks empty out.

What to wear and the weather

Al Wathba is inland desert, which means it cools down faster than the coast once the sun goes. Early in the season (late October and November) evenings are still warm, typically in the mid to high 20s Celsius. From December to February night-time temperatures usually drop into the mid to high teens, and it can feel cooler in an open-air seat waiting for fireworks.

  • Comfortable trainers – the grounds are huge and partly sandy.
  • A light layer for December to February evenings, because the desert chill catches people out after 9pm.
  • Modest clothing – the festival asks visitors to dress modestly and avoid public displays of affection.
  • A power bank – between fireworks videos and the drone show, phone batteries do not survive the night.
  • Some cash as backup for smaller pavilion stalls.

Kids, older visitors and accessibility

Kids: Children under 3 got in free last season and strollers are available at the gates. The fountain show, pavilion performances and family entertainment zones work for all ages, but late fireworks mean little ones are best brought on a weeknight or a non-school-night Saturday. For more ideas sorted by age, see our 40 best family activities in Abu Dhabi and things to do with toddlers.

Older visitors: Seniors aged 60+ entered free last season. Shaded seating is spread across the grounds, and the Heritage Village and pavilion lanes are flat and easy to take at a slow pace.

People of Determination: Entry was free last season, with designated parking, accessible washrooms and separate access corridors, and wheelchairs available at the gates. For specific needs, email info@zayedfestival.ae before your visit.

Good to know before you go

  • Pets are not allowed inside the grounds.
  • Bicycles and scooters are not permitted.
  • Shopping carts are available at the gates, which you will appreciate after the third pavilion.
  • Ramadan evening programmes run towards the end of the season, so the final weeks have a very different, more atmospheric feel.
