Plot twist of the year: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the freebie every Abu Dhabi guide has leaned on for a decade, now charges visitors. It is AED 5 with an Emirates ID and AED 10 without. Annoying? Slightly. The end of free fun in the capital? Not even close.
We went through Abu Dhabi’s free options one by one and kept only the ones that are genuinely free. That means no entry fee, no minimum spend and no “free with a room booking” small print. Every spot below was checked against its official source in September 2026 and comes with a location and a way to get in touch, so you can actually go.

Free culture and heritage in Abu Dhabi
1. Wahat Al Karama
Right across the road from the Grand Mosque, this 46,000 square metre memorial honours the UAE’s fallen heroes. Its centrepiece is 31 leaning aluminium tablets by British artist Idris Khan, circled by a reflecting pool that turns molten gold at sunset. Walking the memorial costs nothing and the visitor centre can book you onto a tour.

Vibe check: Visitors rate it as the calm, underrated sibling of the mosque across the road, just time it for sunset when the pool goes full golden hour and your camera roll starts showing off.
2. Abrahamic Family House
A mosque, a church and a synagogue sharing one garden on Saadiyat Island. The architecture is by Sir David Adjaye and it is one of the most quietly moving places in the city. Entry is free – you just need to book your visit online first. Guided tours are an optional paid extra.

Vibe check: Peaceful enough to reset a hectic week and the guides get glowing reviews, just know the online booking may test your patience before the building restores it.
3. Founder’s Memorial
A tribute to Sheikh Zayed at the western tip of the Corniche. Its heart is The Constellation, an artwork of 1,327 suspended shapes that come together as the Founding Father’s portrait when you stand in the right spot – and after dark they glow like stars. Individuals and small groups can simply walk in; larger groups and cultural tours need booking in advance. It is also a highlight of our night owl’s guide to Abu Dhabi.

4. Cultural Foundation and the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library
Opposite Qasr Al Hosn, the Cultural Foundation is the city’s arts hub, and its own visitor FAQ confirms that exhibition entry is free with no booking needed. Performances and workshops are charged separately. Families should head straight for the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library inside, a genuinely gorgeous space for ages 0-14 that makes a brilliant free rainy-day (or 45-degree-day) escape. The landscaped Al Hosn grounds are free to stroll too. The Qasr Al Hosn fort itself is ticketed.

5. Heritage Village
A recreated pre-oil Emirati village on the Breakwater, complete with craft demonstrations, traditional houses and a small souk. Entry is free, and the view back across the water to the Corniche skyline is one of the best free photos in town.

Vibe check: Free entry and a skyline view that looks borrowed from a postcard, just know a few stalls may be shut when you visit and the walk over from Marina Mall feels longer than it looks in summer.
6. Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental (public areas)
You do not need a room booking to gawp at the gold leaf. Visit Abu Dhabi confirms you can enter Emirates Palace for free, although only certain areas are open to non-guests; the rest needs a day pass, a stay or a private tour. Dress smartly and keep it respectful – it is still a working hotel, and the cafés inside are very much not free.

Free art, galleries and markets
7. 421 Arts Campus
The former Warehouse421 in Mina Zayed is Abu Dhabi’s most interesting contemporary art space, and every exhibition is free – their words, not ours. Expect young regional artists, design shows and workshops, with free parking out front and dogs welcome in the outdoor areas.

8. Manarat Al Saadiyat
In the Saadiyat Cultural District, a short walk from Louvre Abu Dhabi, Manarat’s main galleries and outdoor terrace are free to wander, with a steady rotation of exhibitions. The Spectrum photography residency show runs until 28 October 2026. Big immersive shows, such as the Studio Ghibli exhibition, are ticketed, so check the listing before you go.

9. Mina Zayed markets
Browsing costs nothing and the people-watching is priceless. The rebuilt Mina Zayed Fish Market has more than 100 stalls and dedicated cleaning stations, the Plant Souk is a jungle of 30-plus nurseries and the fruit and vegetable market is worth a wander for the colour alone. Note that the Carpet Souk was hit by a fire on 26 June 2026, so expect some sections to be closed.

WOW Abu Dhabi Expert Tip: Get to the Fish Market early, when the catch is landed on the quayside and the haggling is at full volume. Then walk five minutes to 421 once it opens at 10am – that is a full, free morning in one parking spot.
Free beaches and waterfront walks
10. Abu Dhabi Corniche
Eight kilometres of promenade, cycle path, gardens and play areas – the Corniche is the city’s front room and walking it is free. On the beach, the paid family sections charge AED 10 for adults and AED 5 for children, while the Al Sahil section at Gate 4 is free. The night beach at Gates 4-6, with lifeguards, floodlit swimming and sports courts, has been free since it opened on 29 August 2025. Read more in our Corniche night beach guide.

Vibe check: Clean sand, calm water and lifeguards who actually look alert make the evening swim a local favourite, just expect weekend nights to be busier than a Yas Mall car park in December.
11. Al Bateen Beach
A quieter, Blue Flag-certified stretch of sand looking across to Hudayriyat Island, with free parking and calm water that suits little swimmers. There is also a separate women-only beach next door. Explore the neighbourhood with our Al Bateen and Breakwater guide.

12. Hudayriyat Island
Drive over the bridge from Al Bateen and you get a free public beach with a 600m swim zone, cycling and running tracks (including the Heritage Trail), outdoor gyms and playgrounds. The Marsana beach clubs, Surf Abu Dhabi and bike hire all cost money, but the island itself does not. Our Hudayriyat Island guide has the full picture.

Vibe check: The wide, lit cycling paths have turned Hudayriyat into the city’s favourite after-work workout, just bring your own shade by day because the island clearly forgot to order enough trees.
13. Eastern Mangroves promenade
The Environment Agency’s own line is that the mangroves are totally free to look at – you only pay if you hire a kayak. The waterfront promenade next to Anantara Eastern Mangroves is a peaceful sunset walk with herons stalking the shallows and the city surprisingly far away.

Vibe check: Calm water and a sunset that does most of the work for you, just accept that the real mangrove magic is on a kayak, so treat the walk as a free trailer.
14. Al Qana
There is no admission charge to walk the waterfront promenade on Khor Al Maqta, and 3,000 free parking spaces are thrown in. The canal lights up nicely after dark, and the free Experience Abu Dhabi shuttle bus stops right outside The National Aquarium. The aquarium and boat rides are paid; strolling is not.

Vibe check: Lovely waterfront lights and plenty of room to stroll, just go on a weekend evening because on a weekday it can feel like you have booked the whole canal privately.
15. Yas Bay Waterfront
The promenade that wraps around Etihad Arena is free to wander, with the marina, the skyline of Yas and a steady stream of free seasonal moments such as New Year’s Eve fireworks. Our Yas Bay Waterfront guide has more.

16. Al Maryah Island promenade
The waterfront path behind The Galleria is one of the city’s best-kept free walks, with a skyline that feels very Manhattan-on-the-Gulf. The island hosts free public events for moments such as National Day and New Year’s Eve. For more, see our Al Maryah Island guide.

Free parks and green spaces
17. Reem Central Park
A sprawling, well-kept park in the middle of Al Reem Island with lawns, playgrounds, walking loops and waterfront edges. Entry is free.

18. Al Fay Park
Also on Reem, this newer park by architects SLA swaps the usual lawn for native desert planting, shaded pathways and a design that genuinely feels cooler. It is free to enter and very photogenic.

Vibe check: The native planting and cool architecture make it a quiet favourite for photographers, just manage expectations if your kids think a park means a giant climbing frame.
19. Masdar City and Masdar Park
The Masdar City Visitor Centre is free with no booking needed, and it includes a ride on the driverless personal rapid transit pods – which kids will rate higher than most theme park rides. Nearby, Masdar Park has solar-powered benches, the interactive Tree of Light, a splash area and sports courts, also free.

Free fitness sessions
20. TrainYAS at Yas Marina Circuit
Walk, run or cycle the actual Formula 1 track for free. Sessions run on Monday and Wednesday evenings, with a women-only TrainYAS Ladies session on Tuesdays. You need to register online first, and cyclists must wear a helmet and closed shoes. Complimentary bikes and helmets are available through Abu Dhabi Cycling Club, first come, first served. Early risers can also join TrainAM, which has run on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 6am to 8am (bring your own bike).

WOW Abu Dhabi Expert Tip: Track bookings can bump TrainYAS at short notice and the circuit goes into lockdown around the Grand Prix, so check the official calendar on the day before you load the bike into the car.
21. Yas Mall Walking Club
An air-conditioned group walk through Yas Mall before the shops open, with partner perks thrown in. It is free – just register via the Join Now link on the Yas Mall website.

Vibe check: A lifesaver for anyone whose summer fitness plan melted in June, just be warned that walking past the café counters at 8am is a test of willpower.
22. Al Wathba Cycle Track
A lit, purpose-built road cycling track in the desert with beginner loops of 8km and 16km and longer routes of up to 30km. Bring your own bike and it costs nothing; hire is available on site for a fee.

Free day trips to Al Ain
Al Ain is around 90 minutes from the city and some of its best sights are free. Budget for fuel and check our Darb toll guide before you set off.
23. Al Ain Oasis
A UNESCO World Heritage site with more than 147,000 date palms and a working falaj irrigation system that has been doing its job for centuries. Entry is free, including the Eco-Centre exhibition. Bike and buggy hire cost extra.

24. Al Jahili Fort
One of Al Ain’s most striking forts, beautifully restored and home to a permanent exhibition of explorer Wilfred Thesiger’s photographs of the Empty Quarter. Entry is free.

Vibe check: The mud-brick restoration and Thesiger photos win people over, and it is rarely crowded, just follow your nose rather than the signs, which are shy.
25. Qasr Al Muwaiji
The birthplace of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, now a compact, well-presented museum inside a restored fort. Entry is free and guided tours are on offer.

Vibe check: A tight, well-told story with genuinely friendly staff, just plan to be in and out in under an hour, so pair it with the Oasis.
26. The Jebel Hafeet drive
The UAE’s second-highest peak is topped by a famously twisty public road, and driving it costs nothing but fuel. Park at the summit viewpoint for sunset views over Al Ain and into Oman.

What is no longer free (or never really was)
A lot of older free lists are now out of date. Here is what we left out and why:
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: visitor entry is now AED 5 with an Emirates ID and AED 10 for tourists, per fees announced in September 2026. Worshippers, over-60s, under-3s and People of Determination are still free, and the 30-45 minute cultural tours remain complimentary. The mosque no longer lends abayas, so arrive dressed for it. - Qasr Al Hosn: the fort is ticketed. The Cultural Foundation opposite and the grounds are free.
- Jubail Mangrove Park: the boardwalk is ticketed at AED 15.
- Umm Al Emarat Park, Khalifa Park and Mushrif Central Park: small entry fees apply (Umm Al Emarat is AED 5, with under-3s free).
- Louvre Abu Dhabi and Qasr Al Watan: both are ticketed attractions, so despite what some older guides claim, neither belongs on a free list.
- Saadiyat beaches: the public beach clubs charge entry.
- Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and Al Wathba Fossil Dunes: both show as closed for development on the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi website.
