For years, travelling across the UAE has meant one thing: getting behind the wheel.
Whether it was a weekend escape to Fujairah’s beaches, a business meeting in another emirate, or a family visit across the country, the car has always been king.
That is about to change.
From June 30, Abu Dhabi residents will be able to board the UAE’s first passenger train service and reach Fujairah in just 1 hour and 45 minutes, marking the beginning of a transport transformation that could reshape how people move around the country.
The announcement comes as the new Etihad Rail passenger station in Mohammed Bin Zayed City officially opened, giving residents their first glimpse of what rail travel in the UAE will actually look like.
A New Era of Travel for Abu Dhabi
For many Abu Dhabi residents, Fujairah has always felt slightly out of reach.
The emirate is famous for its mountains, diving spots, beaches and cooler winter weather, but reaching it usually requires a drive of more than three hours depending on traffic.
The new rail connection cuts that journey dramatically.
Instead of planning fuel stops, navigating highways and worrying about traffic, passengers can simply sit back and arrive in Fujairah in less than two hours.
With fares starting from just AED 55 in Comfort Class, the train could become one of the most affordable ways to explore another side of the UAE.
Weekend Getaways Could Get a Lot Easier
The launch may be particularly attractive for Abu Dhabi residents looking for quick weekend escapes.
Fujairah’s beach resorts, diving centres, mountain trails and cultural attractions have long been popular among UAE residents, but the drive has often discouraged spontaneous trips.
Now, a Friday morning train journey could replace a lengthy road trip, making weekend travel far more convenient.
For tourism operators, hotels and attractions in Fujairah, the connection is expected to unlock a new stream of visitors from the capital.
The Beginning, Not the End
While Abu Dhabi and Fujairah will be the first stations to welcome passengers, this is only the start of the network.
Dubai and Al Dhaid stations are scheduled to open on September 30, 2026, followed by stations in Al Dhafra by the end of the year. Sharjah will join the network in March 2027.
Once complete, the rail system will connect major population centres across the UAE, creating a transport option that has been discussed for decades but never realised.
For residents, that means more travel choices, less dependence on long-distance driving, and easier access to business, leisure and tourism destinations.
More Than Just a Train
The new stations have been designed as modern transport hubs rather than simple boarding points.
Passengers can expect cafes, restaurants, retail outlets and hospitality services within the stations, while onboard dining options will also be available.
The aim is to create an experience closer to international rail travel than traditional commuter transport.
The Abu Dhabi station itself has been built with future expansion in mind, including smart technologies, passenger flow systems and infrastructure designed to handle increasing demand as the network grows.
Why This Matters
The UAE has invested heavily in roads, airports and ports over the past two decades.
Passenger rail represents the next major chapter.
Beyond convenience, the project supports wider goals including sustainable transportation, reduced road congestion, economic growth and stronger connectivity between emirates.
For Abu Dhabi residents, however, the impact may feel much simpler.
A trip that once required hours behind the wheel can now be completed comfortably by train.
And for a country built around mobility, that could be one of the most significant travel changes in a generation.
