Abu Dhabi had its heartstrings gently tugged this week—and no, it wasn’t because of another food festival or sudden rain. This time, it was music that did the magic. On April 16th, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) turned its iconic Zayed Theatre into a stage of soul-stirring tribute, celebrating none other than the indomitable Arab music icon, Umm Kulthum. And let’s just say, if you weren’t there, you seriously missed a mic-drop moment in the cultural calendar.

Ghalia Benali and the Soundtrack of a Generation

Taking center stage was the mesmerizing Belgian-Tunisian powerhouse, Ghalia Benali—a woman whose voice could probably make your coffee stir itself. Backed by the rhythmic genius of Moufadhel Adhoum on the oud, Khaled Abouhegaze on drums, and Vincent Noiret weaving cello magic, the ensemble breathed life back into Umm Kulthum’s timeless masterpieces. Over 450 wide-eyed attendees soaked up every note—from students and professors to cultural luminaries and curious Abu Dhabi residents, all basking in a beautiful blend of nostalgia and awe.
VIP Guests and Cultural Glamour
And because every unforgettable event needs its star-studded sparkle, Her Excellency Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of State at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Sheikha Alia bint Khalid Al Qassimi, Managing Director of the UAE National Orchestra, made special appearances, adding an elegant touch to the evening.

Celebrating Women Through Song
The event, held under the patronage of Nadine Kaaki Al Nowais and sponsored by Abu Dhabi Mall (shoutout to great taste), wasn’t just about a concert—it was part of SUAD’s ongoing mission to champion women trailblazers. Fittingly titled “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment,” the night paid homage to Umm Kulthum not only as a vocal goddess but as a symbol of female strength and influence.
A Hall Worthy of a Legend
But wait—there’s more. In a classy curtain call of sorts, SUAD officially renamed its famed Oval Room to Umm Kulthum Hall—because when a legend sings, you don’t just clap. You carve her name in stone. Or at least, on very classy campus signage.
Art, Music, and a Creative Connection

And because creativity loves company, SUAD also hosted a painting activity earlier in the week, inviting students and guests to channel Umm Kulthum’s musical energy onto canvas. Think swirls of sound translated into strokes of color—a beautiful, artsy mashup of melody and imagination.
In short, the night was a pitch-perfect blend of emotion, admiration, and art. Umm Kulthum may have left the stage 50 years ago, but clearly, her voice still echoes—loud, proud, and forever unforgettable.
